What Can FTP Sites do to Protect From Hackers?

Though the Internet has undeniably made our lives better in a number of ways, it has also made the world more dangerous - particularly in terms of cyber security. According to the ITRC Data Breach Report from 2015, over 169 million personal records were exposed throughout the course of the year. There were a grand total of 781 different highly publicized breaches across nearly all areas of business - from the financial sector to education to government and even healthcare.

To make matters worse, this is a problem that only seems to be getting worse over time. According to The Global State of Information Security Survey 2016 conducted by PWC, there were 38% more security incidents in 2015 than there were just a year prior.

This is a large part of the reason why the security of FTP sites is so important. Providers have proven that it is necessary to take a proactive approach to site security by offering a wide range of different features designed to protect their users from these types of issues and more.

    Intrusion Detection and Prevention

One of the most important steps an FTP provider should take to protect their users from cyber attacks involves intrusion detection and prevention. In terms of FTP site security, providers need to take a proactive approach to the proceedings - an intrusion attempt is not a question of "if," but "when."

Sharetru uses proprietary intrusion detection and prevention technology to actively monitor connections, detect suspicious activity and instantly blacklist the offending IP address. This stops a simple intrusion attempt before it has a chance to become a full-fledged cyber attack.

What makes this so important, however, is what happens next. The blacklist is immediately distributed across the FTP site's entire network of servers over the next few minutes. Not only can the offending IP address never harm its original victim, all other users essentially benefit from the same analytical tools instantly.

    Regulatory Compliance

One of the key FTP site hacker protection techniques that providers are using has to do with not the adjustments they're making to their services after the fact, but how they're building their services in the first place from the ground up.

Sharetru in particular is a compliance-focused provider. The way its files are stored, accessed, shared and generally distributed are designed to be compliant with all relevant regulatory bodies including HIPAA, ITAR, GLBA, DSS, SOX and more.

Sharetru's data center is the subject to a regular Type II SOC 1 and SOC 2 audit, guaranteeing not just a superior level of protection, but also helping its customers to avoid both security issues and compliance violations at the same time.

These are just a few of the many steps that security-driven FTP providers are taking to protect their users and ultimately themselves from hackers all around the world. In an environment where 52% of respondents to the 2015 Cyberthreat Defense Report indicated that they felt a successful cyber attack would be carried out against their network within the next year, it's clear that security will become even more important than it already is as time marches on.
